Matlock Golf Club has been featured by Golf Monthly as part of a recent article exploring some of Derbyshire’s most enjoyable and perhaps underappreciated hidden gem golf courses.
The feature followed contributing editor Rob Smith and three friends on a golf trip that included rounds at Matlock, Ashbourne and Chevin. While Derbyshire may not always receive the same attention as some of the UK’s better-known golfing destinations, the article highlighted the quality, character and natural beauty available across the county.
Views, Variety and a Memorable Derbyshire Course
Golf Monthly’s visit to Matlock took place on a warm summer day, allowing the group to experience the course and its surrounding views at their best. Rob Smith praised the variety found throughout the 18-hole, par-70 course. Rather than fitting neatly into one category, Matlock brings together elements of moorland, parkland and downland golf. Helping to contribute to a round of golf that changes character as players move through the course.
Our elevated position provides far-reaching views across Matlock and the Derwent Valley. However, the landscape is not only part of the scenery. Changes in elevation, sloping ground and the angles into the greens all influence how each hole should be played.
A Course That Rewards Thoughtful Golf
At 6,087 yards, Matlock is not designed to overwhelm golfers through length alone. Its challenge comes from positioning the ball correctly, choosing the right club and approaching the greens from the most suitable angle.
This makes the course enjoyable for golfers of different abilities. Longer hitters will find opportunities to be aggressive, while accurate players and good course managers can use the shape of the holes to their advantage.
The changing elevations also mean that the scorecard does not always tell the complete story. Wind, slopes and the position of the flag can all affect club selection, ensuring the course remains interesting over repeated rounds.
Standout Holes at Matlock Golf Club
The Golf Monthly group selected the stoke index 1 sixth and thirteenth among their favourite holes from the round. The sixth was described as a memorable par four that moves through changing ground towards a beautifully positioned green near Cuckoostone Grange. Rob said that the hole is one that rewards a well-placed tee shot and careful approach.
The thirteenth was described as the final par five on the course and presents another distinctive challenge. Golfers must negotiate the landscape before playing towards a green tucked into the hillside.
The elevated par-three tenth was also presented as one of Matlock’s signature holes. With it combining an excellent view with a tee shot that requires confident club selection and an accurate strike.
Independent Recognition for Matlock Golf Club
We know how enjoyable the course can be, but it is particularly rewarding to receive independent recognition from an experienced golf writer who has played courses throughout the UK and around the world.
The feature reflects what our members and regular visitors value about Matlock Golf Club: an interesting and varied course, memorable views and a challenge that relies on more than simply hitting the ball as far as possible.
It also recognises the wider potential of Derbyshire as a destination for a golf break. Courses such as Matlock can be combined with local accommodation, food, attractions and the surrounding Peak District to create a thoroughly enjoyable few days away.
